Scraps of Darkness August Kit Layout (lo)

Hello dear friends!!!  This has been a very sad week for the family.  We lost one of our mini dachshunds, Myles.  He was a black and tan smoothie, and the happiest, most lovable little dog I have ever owned.  I can't write anymore, it is still too fresh in my mind.

I did, however, get another lo finished using the SOD August kit "Kathy's Nature Walk".  The creative juices weren't flowing as easily as normal, but I managed to put it together.  The photo was taken last year at the Fall Festival held by one of the farmers in the valley. You get to go into the fields, pick your own vegetables, and then pay for them.  It's lots of fun.  Every one, but one (my son) is in the picture.  The grandsons were goofing off, but all and all it turned out pretty cute.

For this lo I used the August sketch by Kaisercraft.  It seemed appropriate since the papers I used are from that company.  I cut and tore the gold paper to fit on the white wood paper.  For the top right hand corner, I folded it back, and added Bo Bunny's brads and buttons with the burlap.  Before I did the embellishments though, I laid down some gesso to cover the background surrounding the photo.  I used Finnabar "Art Basics" modeling paste for the first time.  It is amazing stuff.  I used a stencil to give it some dimension.  I splattered paint from Prima's Bloom collection "Antique Gold".  I spritzed a little water on the drops to get a mottled effect.  Next, I stamped around the page to add interest.

I added some lace from an older kit to divide the page and focus on the photo.  I cut the burlap in the pennant shape to match the sketch, and gessoed around the edges to make it stand out.  After gluing it down I wrapped a piece of twine around the layout and tied the bow on the right side of the page.

The next part was really fun!!  We have a lot of mature birch and spruce trees in our back yard and love to have fires in our fire pit.  My hubby was playing with one of the birch logs and started ripping bark from it.  I got real excited and said I wanted it to make into a frame or mat for the photo I was using.  So I glued it together onto a piece of card board, inked the edges with Prima chalk ink "Old Road", and voila!!!  I had this really cool photo mat.

I started having fun with the embellishments.  I used the Prima "Evita-Eloisa" flowers which were included in the Floral add on, the gorgeous Prima "Evita-Elsa" butterfly from the Main kit, Bo Bunny sticker sentiment from the Main kit, Bo Bunny's brads and buttons from the "Heritage" collection and included in the Elements and Main kit. The twine bow behind the flower cluster is from another kit.  And, of course, I had to add some bling around the page.  Here are a few close ups.

Hope you enjoyed my creation this week.  It's a beautiful day in Anchorage with temps in the 70's.  We are definitely having a warm summer/fall.
