Organic Chef

I am so tickled!!!  We are finally have the Alaskan winter I remember.  It has been snowing for the past 3 days, and it is stunning!!!  Cold, but stunning!

Many of you don't know that my son-in-law, Tim Farley, is the Executive Chef of 3 of our main restaurants in Anchorage.  He is amazing!!!  He is the ultimate organic chef.  He wants to use nothing but natural produce, herbs, seasoning, meats, etc., when he is cooking.  And, let me tell you he can COOK!!  You can not imagine what our camping trips are like.  We eat gourmet camping food.  If I told you, you would drool!!!  He loves cooking for his family, using all the best that nature can provide.  That is why I thought that the Graphic 45 "Nature Sketchbook" collection included in this month's Scraps of Darkness January kit "Botanique" are perfect to showcase him.  The picture is not as clear as I would like, but I love his expression.

The background paper is from Simple Stories and is included in the Coordinating Paper Add On.  I ripped along the edges and slid some G45 papers underneath.  Then, I added some micro beads to simulate spores that you find on ferns.  Of course, I distressed all around the edges.

I fussy cut around the main feature paper for the collection that comes in the Main Kit, and centered it in the middle of the page.  I started fussy cutting some of the ferns from another G45 paper.  If you have never tried to cut out ferns, you don't know what you are getting yourself into.  Because the center stem is so thin and the leaves big, it is very difficult to keep the papers from breaking as you cut.  That is the main reason that I left a slight border around it as I cut.

Next, I used some clock chipboard pieces from my stash.  I used clear gesso to prime the pieces, then I used the Blue Fern Studios embossing power "Chili Powder" that comes in the Color Add On.  I added a little black ink around it to give it a distressed look.

Behind the smaller clock is a tag that comes in the G45 diecuts sheet included in the Main Kit.  I did some journaling using sticker acetate on my computer.  There is a TYPO!!!  I said "if" instead of "in".  It's so small that I don't think anyone notices LOLOLO!

I created a mat for the photo using another G45 paper.  I distressed and inked it in black.  I fussy cut some clocks to tuck in around the photo.  In the center of two of them I used the metal clogs that are in the Main Kit.  I also used a G45 chipboard tag that is included in the Elements Add On at the bottom of the photo.

Next I die cut some ferns from heavy duty white cardstock.  Once again ferns are so delicate this was not an easy chore to keep them from breaking.  I used the Kaisercraft Mists in olive that is included in the Color Add On.  I used a paint brush and lightly applied the paint.  Boy does it shine!!!!  After adhering them to the lo, I added lots of micro beads to look like spores from the plant.  Then I tucked in some sweet red flowers that came from a previous kit.

Ironically, you can see a pomegranate printed on the paper at the bottom of the center motif and a red chili pepper peeking out in the center of the page (it may be a flower, but looks like a pepper).  These 2 foods are some of Tim's favorite, so I was surprised and tickled to see them appear on the page.

I really hope that you enjoyed reading about how I created this lo.  Thank you so much for stopping by.  Remember to check out our kits at the Scraps of Darkness store at

See ya next time!
